Bengaluru Techie Death Case: Atul Subhash's Father Alleges Judge Demanded ₹5 Lakh Bribe

The loss of Bengaluru-based techie Atul Subhash, who was a deputy general manager at a private firm, has sparked a profound conversation about the pressures he faced leading up to his tragic suicide. His demise was marked by the discovery of a 24-page suicide note in his apartment, where he accused his wife and her family of constant harassment and even claimed that a judge had sought a bribe of Rs 5 lakh to resolve the case. Subhash, aged 34, wrote "Justice is due" on each page of his note, outlining the legal battles he was embroiled in, including accusations ranging from murder to domestic violence.

Subhash's father, Pawan Kumar, residing in Bihar's Samastipur, revealed that his son's marital issues began to escalate in January 2021 when his wife initiated multiple legal actions against him and his family. Kumar highlighted the legal turmoil his son endured, which included a staggering demand from a judge during mediation - starting from Rs 20,000 and then jumping to Rs 5 lakh for a settlement. This financial demand further exemplifies the alleged corruption and exploitation Subhash faced within the judicial system.

The family's ordeal underscores the perceived misuse of laws intended to protect women, as articulated by Subhash's brother, Vikas. He lamented the false accusations against his family, advocating for legal reforms to prevent the exploitation of such laws. Vikas also mentioned efforts made by his brother to seek justice through letters to various authorities, including the President and the Supreme Court, detailing his predicament.

The incident has reignited discussions on the misuse of Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which addresses cruelty towards married women by their husbands and relatives. Recently, the Supreme Court voiced concerns over this issue, recognizing the potential for the law to be wielded as a tool of personal vendetta. In light of Subhash's death on December 9, the narrative he left behind in his suicide note - with allegations of multiple false cases filed against him by his wife - adds to the ongoing debate about the need for a balanced approach to justice that protects all parties involved fairly.

This tragic case has brought to light the complexities and potential for misuse within the legal system, highlighting the urgent need for mechanisms that ensure the laws serve their intended purpose without enabling exploitation or injustice. The family's grief is compounded by their call for action against those they believe contributed to Subhash's mental anguish, emphasizing the broader implications for legal and social reform.
