Bengaluru Rains Submerge Yelahanka's Kendriya Vihar, BBMP Orders Week-Long Sealdown

Heavy rains in Bengaluru's Yelahanka have led to severe flooding in the Kendriya Vihar apartment complex, prompting the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to impose a week-long seal-down for the safety of residents. BBMP Commissioner Tushar Girinath issued an evacuation notice, urging residents to relocate to safer areas as the central promenade of the complex remains submerged.

The flooding, which has affected over 2,000 residents, has led the BBMP to provide food and temporary accommodation for the displaced. In a statement to Asianet Suvarna News, Girinath assured that the civic body is taking necessary steps to ensure the well-being of those impacted by the disaster.

Beyond Kendriya Vihar, other areas in Yelahanka, including Radiant Jasmine Garden and nearby apartment complexes, have also been affected by waterlogging. The overflow from Jakkuru Lake has worsened the situation, with water levels rising and even collapsing walls in some locations. With water surrounding the apartment compounds, normal life is expected to be disrupted for the next four to five days.

Yelahanka MLA SR Vishwanath attributed the flooding to encroachments on the city's stormwater drains, known as Rajkaluves. He stated, "The blocked water pathways aggravated the situation," and urged the BBMP commissioner to provide compensation to those affected. Special measures have been arranged for elderly residents to ensure their safety during this crisis.

Rescue efforts by firemen and police teams are ongoing, with boats being used to evacuate stranded residents. Safety concerns have escalated due to petrol and diesel leaks from a nearby station into the floodwater, necessitating further evacuations.

The basement of Radiant Apartments has also been flooded, with vehicles submerged in muddy water. Despite residents' attempts to block the water from entering their homes, the situation remains dire as the water continues to seep in.

The fire department and local authorities are working around the clock to ensure safety and minimize further damage in the area.
