Bengaluru Rains: Heavy Downpour Led To Waterlogging

Heavy rainfall wreaked havoc Bengaluru over the weekend, leading to waterlogged streets and snarled traffic throughout the city. Heavy rain lashed out throughout Bengaluru on Sunday, which affected modes of travel including cancelation and delay of several flights and trains. Bengaluru Rains resulted in waterlogged roads causing significant delays.

According to the local reports, heavy rain for last two hours is going on in Bengaluru.

In the city's central business district (CBD), locals are facing difficulties in hiring taxis and autorickshaws, compounded by a tree fall on Seshadri Road that further impeded traffic flow.

Several key junctions and neighborhoods bore the brunt of the deluge, including Hebbal junction, Nagawara, Horamavu, Hennur, Kasturi Nagar, Ramamurthy Nagar, Windsor Manor underbridge-Mehkri Circle, and the Outer Ring Road.

The situation was a source of frustration for many, disrupting plans and causing widespread inconvenience. Amidst this, Nadia, a resident of Sai Layout, noted, "The situation is not as bad as it was earlier this week but the water from the rajakaluve has overflowed onto the road and it is flooded again. The BBMP just pumped out the water yesterday."

Residents Voice Their Concerns

Local residents expressed their dismay at the recurring issue of waterlogging. For instance, Varghese Thomas, living near Kodathi Gate on Sarjapur Road, lamented the daily challenge of navigating through waterlogged streets, emphasizing the ordeal for school children. Another resident from Byrathi's Blessing Garden Layout highlighted the flooding of homes within two blocks, attributing the problem more to inadequate infrastructure than to excessive rainfall.

"This is mainly because the storm water drain in our locality is just 1.5 feet wide and perennially blocked. It is more of an infrastructure issue than an issue of excess rainfall," he pointed out.

The distress was echoed by Purushotham from RR Nagar, who reported, "There was heavy traffic on the BGS flyover till the Rajarajeshwari Nagar arch in the evening. The rain made matters worse, contributing to slow-moving traffic." This sentiment underscores the broader challenges faced by the city's residents during periods of heavy rain.

Impact on Traffic and Daily Life

Roads across Bengaluru, including Hennur Main Road, Ballari Road, Sarjapur Road, Old Airport Road, Bannerghatta Road, Marigowda Road, MG Road, Cunningham Road, Silk Board, and Hebbal flyover, were noted for waterlogging. The disruption affected daily routines, with the commuting public bearing the brunt of the adverse weather conditions.

Amid these conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert, warning of continued rainfall across various districts including Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Belagavi, Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag, Shivamogga, Chikmagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Chitradurga, Davanagere, and Tumakuru.

This alert, spanning from Saturday to Monday, was substantiated by a forecast indicating widespread rainfall due to a shear zone over South Interior Karnataka, further affecting North Interior Karnataka and Coastal Karnataka till October 22.

Rainfall Measurements and Forecasts

The Bengaluru city observatory recorded 17.4 mm of rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, while the HAL observatory noted 12 mm of rain up until 8.30 pm. N Puviarasan, Scientist F and Head at the Meteorological Centre Bengaluru, attributed this to a circulation in the west central Bay of Bengal and adjacent Tamil Nadu coast. He highlighted a yellow alert for Bengaluru and a heavy rainfall alert for Sunday, cautioning residents and authorities of the potential impact.

The weekend's weather conditions in Bengaluru served as a stark reminder of the city's vulnerability to heavy rainfall, exposing infrastructure deficiencies and the urgent need for effective water management solutions. As the city recovers, the focus shifts to addressing these challenges to mitigate future disruptions.
