Bengaluru Metro Introduces Peak And Non-Peak Fares Along with 50% Hike From Today, Check New Rates
Starting today, commuters using the Bengaluru Metro will notice a significant fare increase, with the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) implementing a 50% hike in fares. This adjustment follows the recommendations set forth by the Fare Fixation Committee, which aims to address operational costs and sustainability. The announcement was made public on February 8.

Updated Fare Structure
Under the new fare regime, the maximum fare has escalated from ₹60 to ₹90, and the minimum smart card balance required for travel has been adjusted from ₹50 to ₹90. Below is the revised fare schedule based on distance:
0-2 km: ₹10
2-4 km: ₹20
4-6 km: ₹30
6-8 km: ₹40
8-10 km: ₹50
10-12 km: ₹60
15-20 km: ₹70
20-25 km: ₹80
Above 25 km: ₹90
Why the Hike?
The fare revision comes after the Fare Fixation Committee submitted a detailed report on December 16, 2024. This report, developed under the Metro Railway Operations and Maintenance Act, required adherence from the Metro Administration. After approval from the BMRCL Board, the revised fares are now officially in effect.
Peak and Off-Peak Hour Tariff System
One of the key changes included in the new pricing structure is the implementation of a peak and off-peak hour system. This new measure aims to manage passenger flow more effectively and offers smart card users certain benefits:
- Peak Hour Discount: 5% discount during peak hours.
- Off-Peak Discount: 5% additional discount during off-peak hours, totaling a 10% discount.
- Special Days Discount: 10% discount on Sundays and national holidays for smart card holders.
Off-Peak Hours:
- From service commencement until 8 AM
- Noon to 4 PM
- 9 PM until close on weekdays
Metro Fare Hike Follows BMTC Bus Fare Increase
This fare increase is implemented shortly after a similar hike of 15% in bus fares by the Karnataka government, raising overall transportation costs for daily travelers within Bengaluru. While BMRCL has cited the fare adjustment as essential for sustaining operations, it is likely to affect the affordability for many metro users.
