Bengaluru Floods After Torrential Rain: Boats On Roads, Major Disruptions

Boats were spotted navigating through Bengaluru's waterlogged streets after a heavy overnight downpour flooded several areas of the city. The continuous rain led to severe waterlogging, leaving residents stranded and significantly disrupting daily life.

Many parts of the city experienced knee-deep water, prompting local authorities to step in, assess the damage, and clear the affected streets. The service road from Kogilu Junction toward the Indian Air Force (IAF) base was closed to facilitate rescue operations, as announced by the Northeast Bengaluru traffic police ACP.

A popular weather blogger shared the latest rainfall figures for Karnataka on X, reporting substantial rainfall across the region. Bengaluru Rural recorded 176.5mm of rain, while Bengaluru Urban saw 157mm of rainfall as of 8:30 AM.

On Monday, a tragic incident occurred when a 56-year-old woman, Mallika, lost her life in Bengaluru's Sarjapur area while navigating potholes during the heavy rains caused by cyclonic conditions. According to the Times of India, Mallika was riding pillion on her husband Muniraju's scooter when they were struck by a mini-truck after slowing down to avoid dangerous road conditions. This incident marked the city's first rain-related fatality of the year, during a period when Bengaluru experienced 62mm of rain, causing widespread flooding across low-lying areas and major roads.

As the rains worsened, many frustrated residents took to social media to voice their anger at the civic authorities. From submerged streets to paralyzed traffic, citizens criticized the government and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for their failure to address the city's poor infrastructure.

The heavy rain also caused chaos at the Bengaluru airport on Monday night, delaying more than 20 flights and leading to several flight diversions. Particularly hard-hit were the northern parts of the city, where thunderstorms and rainfall caused widespread disruption. An Air India flight from Delhi and four Indigo flights were diverted to Chennai, according to airport sources. This marks the second time within a week that schools were closed due to weather-related disruptions.
