Bengaluru Airport To Electronics City In 19 Minutes, Flying Taxis For Just Rs 1,700 To Launch Soon
Imagine bypassing hours of Bengaluru's notorious traffic and instead taking to the skies in an electric flying taxi to reach the Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport). This could soon be a reality, thanks to a groundbreaking partnership between Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) and Sarla Aviation. The collaboration aims to provide a flying taxi service that cuts travel time between Electronics City and Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) from a frustrating 152 minutes to just 19 minutes, with fares starting at Rs 1,700.
Adrian Schmidt, co-founder and CEO of Sarla Aviation, said, "Currently, a journey from Indiranagar to the airport can take 1.5 hours. Very soon, we will reduce that to just 5 minutes with Sarla Aviation's fully electric flying taxis," Schmidt shared in a recent LinkedIn post.

BIAL, which operates KIA, also expressed its enthusiasm for the initiative. "This partnership marks a new chapter in our commitment to Advanced Air Mobility solutions, developed right here in Karnataka," the airport authority announced on X (formerly Twitter). They emphasized that the collaboration would pioneer new operational models for seven-seater eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, aiming to revolutionize the accessibility of air travel.
However, despite the excitement, the flying taxi service is still years away. A source from BIAL told moneycontrol that, "The eVTOL ecosystem, including regulatory approval, still needs to mature. There's a long way to go, and they haven't even built a prototype yet." The project will go through several phases, starting with the development of a prototype, followed by securing commercial airspace and regulatory approvals.
The concept of electric flying taxis has attracted international attention as well. California-based Archer recently signed a memorandum of understanding with InterGlobe Enterprises (operator of IndiGo) to bring electric air taxis to India by 2026, pending regulatory clearances. In support of this growing sector, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has also issued advisory guidelines on airworthiness criteria for VTOL aircraft.
While the vision of flying taxis promises a revolutionary shift in urban mobility, significant challenges remain before it becomes a reality. Nonetheless, with growing interest and advancements in electric air travel, Bengaluru may soon witness the future of transportation soaring above its gridlocked streets.
