BBMP to Levy 15% Annual Interest on Unpaid Property Tax from April 1

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has intensified its efforts to collect property tax for the financial year 2024-25. So far, the civic body has collected ₹4,566 crore, with a target of reaching ₹6,000 crore by the end of the current financial year.

Out of 20.5 lakh property owners in the BBMP jurisdiction, 3.49 lakh individuals have yet to pay their property tax. Among them, 1.73 lakh are long-term defaulters, while 1.76 lakh have defaulted in the current year. The total outstanding dues amount to ₹390 crore, according to Munish Moudgil, Special Commissioner of the Revenue Department.

Repeated Notices Ignored by Defaulters

Despite multiple reminders through notices, SMS alerts, IVRS calls, personal calls, and attachment notices, many long-term defaulters have failed to clear their dues. These property owners have also not taken advantage of BBMP's one-time settlement scheme. Some have not paid property tax for several years, leading to significant revenue losses for the civic body.

Zone-Wise Property Tax Collection

The property tax collected from different BBMP zones so far is as follows:

• Bommanahalli Zone - 2,67,088 properties | ₹400.55 crore
• Dasarahalli Zone - 70,700 properties | ₹110.22 crore
• BBMP East Zone - 2,47,440 properties | ₹649.40 crore
• Mahadevapura Zone - 3,26,747 properties | ₹928.56 crore
• RR Nagar Zone - 2,08,302 properties | ₹251.10 crore
• BBMP South Zone - 2,27,270 properties | ₹565.62 crore
• BBMP West Zone - 1,87,715 properties | ₹411.56 crore
• Yelahanka Zone - 17,08,801 properties | ₹357.17 crore

100% Penalty from April 1

Property owners who fail to pay their dues by March 31 will face double penalties. From April 1, BBMP will impose a 100% penalty on the outstanding property tax. For instance, if a property owner owes ₹100 in tax, an additional penalty of ₹100 will be levied. Moreover, an annual interest rate of 15% will also be applied on the pending amount.

BBMP has urged property owners to clear their dues before the deadline to avoid heavy penalties and legal action.
