Are Your Favorite Cakes Safe? Karnataka Warns After Cancer-Causing Agents Found in 12 Bakery Varieties
In a concerning revelation for cake lovers in Bengaluru, the Karnataka Food Safety and Quality Department has issued a warning about the presence of potentially carcinogenic ingredients in popular bakery cakes.
Following tests on 235 cake samples collected from various bakeries, it was found that 12 varieties contained dangerous levels of artificial colors linked to cancer, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Key Findings: Carcinogenic Substances Detected
Among the samples tested, 223 were deemed safe, while the remaining 12 showcased significant levels of harmful artificial colors. The cakes in question include popular choices like red velvet and black forest, which often rely on visually appealing artificial dyes to enhance their aesthetic appeal, as per India Today reports.
The detected substances include Allura Red, Sunset Yellow FCF, Ponceau 4R, Tartrazine, and Carmoisine-ingredients that not only elevate cancer risks but may also contribute to a range of physical and mental health issues.
Prior Warnings and Regulatory Actions
This warning follows earlier actions taken by the Karnataka government, including a ban on Rhodamine-B, a coloring agent commonly found in popular dishes such as gobi manchurian and cotton candy. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao emphasized that strict measures will be enforced against sellers using these harmful chemicals in their culinary creations. The use of Rhodamine-B, notorious for its application in textile dyeing and paper manufacturing, was highlighted for its role in enhancing the visual appeal of food, raising significant health concerns, as reported by India Today.
Call for Compliance
In light of these findings, the Karnataka Food Safety and Quality Department has urged all bakeries to adhere to food safety and quality standards. The department stressed the importance of avoiding artificial colors that exceed permissible limits, as outlined in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. Section 16 of these regulations explicitly prohibits the use of artificial food coloring in dishes like gobi manchurian, reflecting the government's commitment to safeguarding public health.
Conclusion: Exercise Caution
As consumers, it's crucial to remain vigilant about the ingredients in the food we consume. The recent findings serve as a reminder to approach bakery products with caution, particularly those that boast vibrant colors. It's advisable to stay informed about food safety practices and opt for establishments that prioritize health and quality.
