OpenAI’s GPT-5 Coming Soon: Faster, Smarter, and Possibly Ad-Supported
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has officially confirmed that GPT-5 is set to launch this summer, marking a significant advancement in generative AI technology. The announcement came during the first episode of OpenAI's new company podcast, though Altman did not reveal an exact release date.

GPT-5: A Major Leap Over GPT-4
According to Business Insider, GPT-5 is shaping up to be a "materially better" model than its predecessor, GPT-4. Early testers have reportedly noted vast improvements in performance, signaling a major leap in AI capability.
The news comes amid rising global competition in the artificial intelligence sector, with companies racing to deliver more accurate, reliable, and powerful models.
Enterprise Demand Driving OpenAI's Growth
OpenAI's core revenue currently comes from enterprise customers purchasing enhanced versions of ChatGPT. The GPT-5 launch is expected to be the next strategic move to sustain this growth and provide more value to business users.
Sam Altman on Monetizing ChatGPT: Ads Might Be Coming
In a notable shift, Altman also discussed the possibility of introducing ads on ChatGPT. While he said he's "not totally against" the idea, he emphasized that any form of monetization would need to be implemented with extreme caution.
"Modifying the model's output based on who pays for the ad would be a trust-destroying moment," Altman warned.
Instead, he suggested placing ads outside the LLM's output stream, such as in a sidebar or footer, to preserve the integrity of ChatGPT's responses.
"The burden of proof would have to be very high. It would have to feel really useful to users and really clear that it was not messing with the LLM's output," he added.
Legal Troubles: OpenAI Ordered to Retain Chat Logs
Alongside the excitement of the GPT-5 release, OpenAI is also facing growing legal challenges. In its ongoing legal battle with The New York Times over alleged copyright infringement, a court has ordered OpenAI to preserve all output logs from ChatGPT, regardless of user deletion requests or privacy laws.
This ruling clashes with OpenAI's existing policy, which retains deleted chats for 30 days before permanent deletion. The company has confirmed it plans to appeal the court's decision.
On the podcast, Altman pushed back against the court's demand, saying:
"It's a crazy overreach of The New York Times to ask that. Privacy needs to be the core principle of using AI."
Why GPT-5 Matters
The GPT-5 launch is expected to push the boundaries of what's possible with generative AI, from enterprise applications to everyday user interactions. As the AI ecosystem grows more powerful, concerns around trust, transparency, monetization, and data privacy are taking center stage.
