Instagram Tightens Safety Rules for Teen Users

Meta is taking a major step to protect teenagers on Instagram. Starting now, teen accounts will automatically be limited to PG-13 content, meaning they'll avoid posts with sexual content, drugs, or dangerous stunts. Teens won't be able to adjust these settings without their parents' approval.

Stronger Controls for Parents

Parents now have more tools to manage their teen's Instagram experience. They can block additional posts, restrict interactions, and enforce stricter content limits. Meta calls this the most significant update since teen accounts were introduced last year.

Targeting Harmful Content

The move comes after repeated criticism about teens encountering inappropriate content online. Even with previous safeguards, teens could still stumble upon harmful material related to self-harm, eating disorders, and sexual content. The new rules prevent teens from following accounts that consistently share unsuitable content, and existing follows on such accounts are now hidden from teen feeds.

Meta is also expanding search term filters, now including words related to alcohol and gore, along with previously blocked terms like "suicide" and "eating disorders." These protections also extend to AI chat experiences designed for teens, keeping interactions age-appropriate.

Creating a Safer Environment

Accounts that share inappropriate material can no longer follow, message, or comment on teen accounts. Combined with a new "limited content" mode, these changes aim to give parents more control and provide teens a safer, healthier environment online.

Meta hopes these updates will reduce the risks teens face while maintaining a social media experience that's both engaging and secure.
