AI Chatbots Like ChatGPT Reshape Human Communication Patterns And Language Use

Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots like ChatGPT are reshaping human communication, according to a recent study. Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Germany discovered that people are beginning to speak more like ChatGPT. This shift is not mirrored by the AI adapting to human speech patterns.
The study involved analysing over 360,000 YouTube videos and 771,000 podcast episodes from before and after ChatGPT's release. The researchers aimed to track the frequency of 'GPT words'. Their findings revealed a noticeable increase in the use of words commonly generated by ChatGPT since its popularity surged.
Impact on Human Language
"We detect a measurable and abrupt increase in the use of words preferentially generated by ChatGPT such as delve, comprehend, boast, swift, and meticulous, after its release," stated the study published on arXiv. This suggests that AI is influencing human culture by introducing new linguistic traits.
This phenomenon marks the start of a cultural feedback loop where traits circulate between humans and machines. While previous research indicated AI's influence on written communication, this study highlights its impact on spoken language for the first time.
Training and Biases
ChatGPT and similar models are trained using vast datasets from books, websites, forums, Wikipedia, and other public resources. They undergo fine-tuning with proprietary techniques and reinforcement learning. The resulting linguistic profile is rooted in human language but exhibits systematic biases distinct from natural human communication.
"The patterns that are stored in AI technology seem to be transmitting back to the human mind," said Levin Brinkmann, co-author of the study, in an interview with Scientific American. Humans naturally imitate others but tend to mimic those perceived as knowledgeable or important.
Cultural Feedback Loop
The research highlights how machines initially trained on human data can develop their own cultural traits. These traits then influence human culture in return. This bidirectional exchange creates a closed cultural feedback loop between humans and AI.
The rise of AI chatbots has led to changes in both written and spoken communication among humans. As these technologies continue to evolve, their impact on language and culture will likely deepen further.
