Obama to issue order to close Gitmo during first week in office
Washington, Jan.13 (ANI): President-elect Barack Obama is preparing to issue an executive order during his first week in office to close the military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
According to FOX News, the order will not set a deadline for shuttering the controversial prison.
Rather, Obama will order the facility to be closed as quickly as possible while leaving room for national security implications to be considered.
The Obama transition office declined to comment officially on the future of the Guantanamo Bay prison.
But reports that he plans to order the facility closed come just one day after Obama told ABC News that closing the prison is "complicated," and that he couldn't promise to shutter the facility within his first 100 days in office.
The Guantanamo directive would be one of a series of executive orders Obama is planning to issue shortly after he takes office next Tuesday, according to two advisers. Also expected is an executive order about certain interrogation methods, but details were not immediately available Monday. (ANI)
