Rajya Sabha members not amused by simians' trouble in Delhi

New Delhi, May 16 (UNI) Delhi'ites can readily vouch for simians' antics which are far from innocuous.

With TV antennas being wrenched away from supporting iron bars, eatables getting pilfered from kitchens and even fridges, children suffering bites and passers-by facing a constant threat to their safety, monkeys in most areas of Delhi have become a major nuisance.

When the issue was raised by AIADMK member K. Malaisamy in the Rajya Sabha as a Special Mention during Zero Hour, he found ready support from lawmakers cutting across party lines.

''In the name of environmental protection, we cannot afford to remain silent spectators of the monkey menace in South Avenue, where several government offices and flats of MPs are located,'' Dr.

Malaisamy said in all seriousness.

''Monkeys come in battalions, break cables, mock at passers-by and tease and harass them and even decamp with the belongings of children who come to playgrounds,'' he went on, as members kept on supporting him during his submission.

Strongly contending that the antics of simians were far from harmless, he appealed to the Environment and Forests Minister to take speedy action and do away with the menace once and for all.
