Will Gautam Gambhir Resign as India Head Coach After IPL Mega Offer?

All eyes are once again on Gautam Gambhir, as reports suggest the former India opener has received a lucrative and influential offer from Rajasthan Royals-an approach that could shape the next phase of his career.

Currently serving as India men's head coach, Gambhir is under contract until the 2027 ODI World Cup, committing him to a full international cycle. Despite the buzz around the IPL proposal, sources indicate that Gambhir remains focused on his national responsibilities and has not signalled any immediate shift.

A powerful offer-but with strings attached

According to reports, Rajasthan Royals have proposed a multi-dimensional role for Gambhir that includes CEO, mentor, and partner responsibilities. The offer is said to be linked to an ownership transition within the franchise, with new stakeholders coming on board. As part of this restructuring, Gambhir has reportedly been offered a 2-3 per cent minority equity stake, giving him both strategic control and ownership presence.

The interest is hardly surprising. Gambhir's IPL résumé is among the strongest in Indian cricket. As captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, he led the side to two IPL titles, and later returned as mentor when KKR won again. With Lucknow Super Giants, Gambhir helped the team reach the playoffs in both seasons, finishing third in the points table each time.

The conflict that complicates everything

Despite the appeal, Gambhir faces a major roadblock. Supreme Court-backed Lodha Committee guidelines clearly prohibit individuals from holding roles with both the Indian team and an IPL franchise simultaneously. Positions such as mentor, advisor, executive, or partner fall under conflict-of-interest regulations.

This means that accepting the Rajasthan Royals offer would require Gambhir to resign as India head coach, a move considered unlikely while his contract with the Board of Control for Cricket in India remains active.

Gambhir is currently deeply involved in India's 2026 T20 World Cup campaign, with the defending champions already qualified for the Super 8 stage. He is also expected to be a key figure as India prepares for cricket's return to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where the sport will feature in the T20 format.

With major international commitments ahead and strict governance rules in place, Gambhir's immediate future appears firmly tied to the national team. The Rajasthan Royals approach, however, reinforces one thing clearly: Gautam Gambhir remains one of the most influential minds in Indian cricket today.
