IPL 2026: Rohit Sharma’s Blazing 78 Powers Mumbai Indians to Big Win Over Kolkata Knight Riders

A powerful knock from Rohit Sharma set up a memorable run chase for Mumbai Indians against Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League 2026 season. Playing at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on March 29, Mumbai Indians successfully chased down a daunting target of 221 to win the match by six wickets.

Although the team is currently led by Hardik Pandya, it was former captain Rohit Sharma who stole the spotlight with a brilliant batting display. The experienced opener attacked from the start and kept the pressure firmly on the Kolkata bowlers.

Rohit smashed 78 runs off just 38 balls, playing a mix of elegant drives and powerful pulls that electrified the Wankhede crowd. His aggressive intent ensured Mumbai stayed well ahead of the required run rate during the crucial early overs of the chase.

Opening alongside South African batter Ryan Rickelton, Rohit built a huge 145-run partnership for the first wicket. Rickelton also impressed with an attacking 81 off 43 deliveries, as the duo dominated the Kolkata bowling attack and laid the perfect foundation for the chase.

The 145-run stand created history at Wankhede Stadium. It became the highest opening partnership for Mumbai Indians at the venue, surpassing the previous record held by Evin Lewis and Suryakumar Yadav against Delhi Capitals in 2018. It is also the second-highest partnership for Mumbai Indians in any wicket in IPL history.

Earlier in the match, Kolkata Knight Riders had posted a challenging 220 runs in the first innings after an aggressive batting performance. Despite the big total, Mumbai's confident start made the chase look far less difficult.

After the opening stand ended, the remaining batters calmly finished the job, guiding Mumbai Indians to 221/4 in 19.1 overs and sealing a comfortable victory.

The win gives Mumbai Indians strong early momentum in IPL 2026. Their next challenge will be against Delhi Capitals at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on April 4, where the team will look to build on this dominant performance.
