IPL 2026 Controversy: Nitish Rana has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee and handed one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the IPL Code of Conduct during the IPL 2026 match between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals.

The penalty relates to a violation of Article 2.3, which covers the "use of an audible obscenity during a match." The incident took place in the 19th over when Rana was involved in a heated exchange with the fourth umpire following a controversial on-field decision.

What Triggered the Incident

The flashpoint came during Delhi Capitals' chase when Tristan Stubbs requested a change of gloves due to discomfort caused by sweat in humid conditions at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The on-field umpires denied the request, citing playing conditions that require batters to be ready once the bowler begins the run-up.

Moments later, Stubbs attempted an attacking shot and was dismissed, a turning point that effectively ended Delhi's hopes in the chase. The decision and its timing frustrated the Delhi camp, prompting visible protests from players and support staff.

Rana, along with members of the coaching staff, approached the fourth umpire to question the call. During this exchange, Rana was found to have used inappropriate language, leading to the Code of Conduct breach.

Admission and Sanction

Rana admitted to the offence and accepted the match referee's sanction, avoiding the need for a formal hearing. Level 1 breaches carry lighter penalties, with the match referee's decision being final and binding.

Match Overshadowed by Controversy

While the incident grabbed headlines, the match itself saw Chennai Super Kings post a formidable 212/2, powered by Sanju Samson's unbeaten 115 and a solid 59 from Ayush Mhatre. Delhi Capitals fell short at 189, despite Stubbs' fighting 60, handing CSK a 23-run victory.
