School Holiday Alert: Severe cold and dense fog across north India have brought relief for many students, as authorities in several states extended school holidays on January 5, 2026. With temperatures plunging and visibility dropping sharply during early morning hours, education departments have chosen safety over regular classroom schedules.

The worsening weather conditions at the start of the new year have disrupted daily routines, especially school commutes. Dense fog, described by officials as near "zero visibility," and an intense cold wave have prompted administrations to keep schools shut, offering students an extended winter break.

Uttar Pradesh Schools to Remain Closed

In Uttar Pradesh, school holidays have been extended in most districts following directions from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. District Magistrates have been authorised to assess local weather conditions and declare closures accordingly. As a result, many districts have announced that schools will remain closed on January 5.

The Chief Minister's Office has instructed that most primary and secondary schools remain shut till Monday. In major cities such as Lucknow, Varanasi and Prayagraj, the rules are stricter, with mandatory holidays declared for students up to Class 8. Several schools have also issued individual notices confirming the continuation of the winter break.

Relief for Younger Students, Uncertainty for Senior Classes

While the holiday extension has come as a relief for younger students and parents, Classes 9 to 12 face a mixed situation. In some districts, schools have opted for online classes during the extended break, while others have decided to keep campuses closed until January 12, 2026.

For students preparing for board examinations, schools are planning alternative academic support once the weather improves. Afternoon extra classes and doubt-clearing sessions may be introduced with special permission from local authorities, ensuring that learning continues without compromising safety.

Delhi-NCR Schools Continue Winter Vacation

In Delhi, government and private schools are already observing winter vacations until January 15, 2026. Similar holiday extensions are in place in parts of Delhi-NCR, including Noida and Ghaziabad, where schools up to Class 8 remain closed due to the cold wave and fog.

However, schools conducting Class 10 and 12 practical examinations are following separate arrangements. Students involved in practical exams have been advised to check directly with their schools for exact schedules, as regular classes remain suspended.

Possible Reopening with Revised Timings

Authorities have indicated that if weather conditions improve, schools may reopen from January 6 with revised timings. Classes are likely to be held between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm to reduce exposure to extreme cold and fog. Morning school bus services may also start later than usual to ensure road safety.

Officials have stressed that student health and safety remain the top priority. Parents and students are advised to stay alert for official updates, as school holiday orders may be extended or modified depending on weather conditions.
