Delhi MCD Bypolls Set for November 30: AAP and BJP Brace for Key Electoral Battle

The Delhi State Election Commission on Tuesday announced the schedule for by-elections to 12 wards of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), setting the stage for another crucial political contest between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The polling will take place on November 30, while vote counting is scheduled for December 3.

Election Schedule and Process

According to the Commission, nominations open on November 3. Candidates can file nominations until November 10, with scrutiny on November 12 and withdrawals allowed until November 15. Voting will be conducted from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm without interruption.

Key Battlegrounds

The bypolls will be held in Mundka, Shalimar Bagh-B, Ashok Vihar, Chandni Chowk, Chandni Mahal, Dwarka-B, Dichaon Kalan, Naraina, Sangam Vihar-A, Dakshin Puri, Greater Kailash, and Vinod Nagar wards.

Several of these wards have political significance - Shalimar Bagh-B, once held by Rekha Gupta, now Delhi Chief Minister, and Dwarka-B, vacated after BJP's Kamaljeet Sehrawat was elected to the Lok Sabha from West Delhi. Other seats fell vacant after councillors from BJP and AAP contested and won Assembly elections held earlier this year.

Political Stakes

The upcoming bypolls are expected to serve as a litmus test for both AAP and BJP ahead of future civic and state elections. For the ruling AAP, the contests present a chance to strengthen its hold over the MCD, while the BJP will aim to regain lost ground and reaffirm its urban voter base.

Political observers view these by-elections as a mini-referendum on local governance and development issues, including sanitation, infrastructure, and civic amenities. With both parties likely to deploy their top leaders for campaigning, the Delhi civic political scene is set for an intense face-off.
