How the Scam Attempt Began
The incident unfolded when the man received a message on Facebook from someone pretending to be his former college senior, an IAS officer. The impersonator claimed that a friend who served in the CRPF was being transferred and needed to sell household appliances and furniture at very low prices. The Delhi resident grew skeptical since his real senior already had his direct number. After verifying that the account was fake, he decided to continue the chat to expose the fraudster.
The scammer later contacted him from a different number that displayed an army profile picture and pushed him to make a payment through a QR code. The Delhi man acted as if he was facing technical errors while scanning it, buying time to set up a counterplan.
Using ChatGPT to Set a Digital Trap
During this pause, he used ChatGPT to generate a simple webpage capable of collecting a user's GPS coordinates and capturing an image through the device's front camera. After hosting the page, he shared the link with the scammer and claimed that uploading the QR code there would speed up the payment process.
Falling for the bait, the fraudster clicked the link. Within moments, the webpage recorded his exact location, IP address, and a clear photograph of his face.
Scammer Panics After Being Exposed
Armed with this information, the Delhi resident sent the scammer his own photo and location details. The sudden exposure caused the fraudster to panic. He immediately began sending frantic messages, begging for forgiveness and promising to abandon his fraudulent activities.
The man later posted screenshots of the exchange on Reddit under the caption, "Used ChatGPT to locate a scammer and made him beg me".
"Scammer tried running an Army transfer/cheap goods scam while impersonating a college senior, an IAS officer. Instead of paying, I used ChatGPT to quickly code a geolocation/front-camera capture link, tricked him into clicking it, and scared plus forced him to turn down the operation immediately by sending him his own photo and coordinates," he wrote.
