BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal Proposes Renaming Delhi to Indraprastha

BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal has urged the Union government to rename Delhi as Indraprastha, invoking the city's ancient roots from the Mahabharata era. The proposal, he said, aims to reconnect the national capital with its civilisational heritage and boost tourism by highlighting its historic identity.

Khandelwal, who represents the Chandni Chowk constituency, wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah recommending that Delhi be officially renamed Indraprastha. He argued that the name reflects the capital's historical and cultural significance, believed to have originated from the city founded by the Pandavas along the Yamuna River.

"Delhi should regain its ancient and glorious name, Indraprastha," Khandelwal stated in his letter. He also suggested renaming major landmarks such as Old Delhi Railway Station to Indraprastha Junction and Indira Gandhi International Airport to Indraprastha Airport. Additionally, he proposed the installation of grand statues of the Pandavas in a prominent part of the city.

Khandelwal emphasised that Delhi has long been regarded as the soul of Indian civilisation - a city symbolising dharma, prosperity, and governance based on public welfare. Renaming it, he said, would not only restore historical justice but also project India's cultural heritage globally.

He cited examples of cities like Ayodhya and Varanasi that have embraced their ancient names, asserting that Delhi should follow suit under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a cultural renaissance.

Copies of Khandelwal's proposal have been sent to key ministers, including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, and Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, for further consideration.

"The change is not just about a name," Khandelwal concluded. "It is about restoring Indraprastha's legacy and India's timeless identity."
