A disturbing case of alleged medical negligence at a government hospital in Pandharpur has once again ignited the debate over why many patients prefer private hospitals despite the higher costs. A six-year-old boy reportedly lost a finger from the wrong hand during a surgical procedure, leaving his family shocked and demanding strict action.

According to the child's relatives, doctors had planned to remove an extra finger from his right hand, which was causing pain and difficulty in gripping objects. The family said they signed a consent form that clearly mentioned surgery on the right hand. However, after the operation was completed, they allegedly discovered that the doctors had operated on the boy's left hand instead.

The incident has triggered anger among locals, with many pointing out that such errors are one of the reasons people often choose private hospitals over government facilities, even if it means spending much more money. Families say they fear mistakes, overcrowding and lack of accountability in some public hospitals.

Hospital officials defended the procedure by stating that the child was suffering from bilateral postaxial polydactyly, a condition where a person is born with extra little fingers on both hands. According to them, surgery might eventually have been required on the left hand as well because the condition affected both sides.

However, the family strongly rejected this explanation. They insisted the child had pain and stiffness only in the right hand, and the left hand had no issues that required surgery.

After the complaint surfaced, the health department ordered an inquiry into the alleged medical negligence. A two-member committee has been formed to review medical records, consent papers and statements from the doctors, hospital staff and the boy's family.

The family is demanding strict punishment for those responsible, saying such mistakes can permanently affect a child's life. The case has also renewed the discussion about the quality of care in public hospitals and why many patients continue to rely on private healthcare despite the financial burden.

Authorities said further action will depend on the findings of the investigation once the committee submits its report.
