Mumbai Metro Expansion: 21-km Double-Decker Flyover to Connect Kalyan, Dombivli, and Bhiwandi

In a major infrastructure boost for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, authorities are planning a 21-kilometre double-decker flyover that will seamlessly connect Shil Phata junction with Bhiwandi's Ranjnoli junction via Kalyan. The ambitious project aims to ease road congestion and enhance metro connectivity for thousands of commuters in Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, and Bhiwandi.

According to a report by the Hindustan Times, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has initiated the process of appointing a consultant to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed flyover. As per preliminary plans, the structure will begin at Shil Phata on National Highway 48 (NH-48), pass through Dombivli and Kalyan, and end at Ranjnoli Junction on National Highway 160 (NH-160).

Features of the Upcoming 21-km Double-Decker Flyover

The proposed flyover will feature a four-lane road on the lower deck dedicated to vehicular movement, while the upper deck will house metro rail tracks. The metro corridor will include multiple key routes: Metro Line 5 (Bhiwandi to Kalyan), Metro Line 12 (Kalyan to Taloja), and Metro Line 14 (Kanjurmarg to Badlapur).

Documents accessed by HT indicate that the flyover will be integrated with other major infrastructure developments, such as the Airoli-Katai Freeway at Katai Naka and the Virar-Alibaug Multi-Modal Corridor located just beyond it. The integration of these routes is expected to enhance regional connectivity and reduce travel time significantly across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The upper deck's metro lines will intersect at various junctions, providing smooth transit options for passengers traveling between different parts of the region. Moreover, while preparing the detailed project report, engineers will also consider the alignment of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train, which runs close to the proposed flyover route.

Construction Challenges Ahead

Despite the project's promising scope, officials anticipate certain construction challenges, particularly where the flyover will cross active railway lines. The double-decker structure is expected to pass over two key railway crossings - before Katai Naka and near Patri Pul in Kalyan. Given the heavy flow of both local and long-distance trains on the central railway route, engineers will need to implement advanced construction strategies to minimize disruption and ensure safety.

Once completed, the 21-km double-decker flyover will stand as a transformative addition to Mumbai's infrastructure network, easing road traffic, improving metro connectivity, and strengthening the overall transport ecosystem of Navi Mumbai and its adjoining regions.
