Mumbai Local Train Update: Western Railway to Run Late-Night Special Trains for Shab-e-Barat 2026

Western Railway has scheduled late-night special local trains for Shab-e-Barat 2026, aiming to manage heavy festive crowds between south Mumbai and the suburbs as devotees travel to mosques, shrines and graveyards on the 15th night of Shaban.

According to Western Railway, two extra Suburban EMU services will run between Churchgate and Virar. These services will operate on the Western Line during the night of Tuesday, February 3, and the early hours of Wednesday, February 4, to provide additional capacity.

The special EMU trains are planned mainly for early morning traffic, when many passengers return home after prayers. Western Railway has said the additional services are meant to handle the extra rush linked to the religious gathering and ensure passengers are not left waiting for regular last trains.

Western Railway used its official X account, earlier called Twitter, to share timing and route information for these Mumbai suburban services, underlining that the temporary EMU trains are dedicated to passenger convenience during Shab-e-Barat.

On Shab-e-Barat night, many mosques and shrines remain open throughout, and some hold special prayers. Devotees spend hours in worship and often visit graveyards of ancestors, which leads to increased late-night movement across Mumbai, including long trips from suburban areas towards central religious sites.

Shab-e-Barat is widely known as the night of forgiveness, and some scholars believe praying on this night brings divine mercy, with sins forgiven by all mighty Allah. Western Railway’s temporary Churchgate–Virar services are intended to support this religious observance by giving travellers extra travel options during the busy hours.
