Communal Clashes in Murshidabad During Ram Navami Procession; BJP Slams Mamata Government

Tensions flared in parts of Murshidabad after clashes broke out during a Ram Navami procession, leading to incidents of stone-pelting, vandalism, and arson. The situation created panic in the area, with several people reportedly injured.

Police and security forces were quickly deployed to restore order, and officials later said the situation has now been brought under control.

What Happened During the Procession

According to reports, the Ram Navami procession began from Mackenzie Park and was moving peacefully through the area. However, as it reached the Fultala crossing, violence reportedly erupted.

Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that stones and bricks were thrown at the procession, causing injuries to several participants. They also claimed that the procession was attacked more than once as it moved forward.

The violence led to damage to property and created chaos on the streets, prompting immediate intervention by authorities.

Heavy Security Deployment

Following the incident, security forces, including the Rapid Action Force, were deployed to the affected area. Police teams acted quickly to control the situation and prevent further escalation.

Murshidabad Range DIG Ajit Singh Yadav reached the spot along with a large police contingent. He stated that the situation is currently under control and that strict monitoring is ongoing.

Police have detained several individuals in connection with the incident, and patrols are continuing to maintain peace.

Political Reactions and Allegations

The incident has triggered a political row, with BJP leaders accusing the state government of failing to maintain law and order.

Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticised the handling of the situation and alleged that religious sentiments were hurt during the clashes. He also shared visuals on social media and questioned whether it was wrong to display saffron flags during the festival.

Adhikari accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of "appeasement politics," claiming that such incidents reflect repeated humiliation of certain communities in the state.
