20-Year-Old Woman Gang-Raped By Two Acquaintances During Birthday Celebration In Kolkata

A 20-year-old woman from Haridevpur, Kolkata, was allegedly gang-raped by two acquaintances on Friday, September 5, under the pretext of celebrating her birthday, according to police reports.

The survivor filed a complaint at the Haridevpur police station, alleging that the two men lured her to a residence in the Regent Park area after dining together. When she attempted to leave, the accused locked the door and sexually assaulted her. She managed to escape the following morning and informed her family about the incident.

The accused, identified as Chandan Mallick and Dwip (Deep) Biswas, are currently absconding. Police have launched an investigation into the case.

In an official statement, the police said: "The FIR-named accused, Chandan Mallick, brought the complainant to the house of another accused, Dwip Biswas, near Malancha, where both allegedly raped and assaulted her. An investigation in the case is ongoing."

According to police sources cited by India Today, the woman had come into contact with Chandan Mallick a few months earlier. He introduced himself as the head of a South Kolkata puja committee and later introduced her to Dwip Biswas. Both men reportedly promised to involve her in the committee, after which the three began frequent communication.

Previous Case in June

This incident comes months after another shocking crime in the city. In June 2025, a 24-year-old law student was allegedly gang-raped inside South Calcutta Law College (SCLC), sparking outrage among students and political groups.

In that case, three accused - Monojit Mishra, along with students Promit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed - were arrested by the Kolkata Police. A fourth accused, the college's security guard, Pinaki Banerjee, was also taken into custody.
