Who Was Dipu Chandra Das? Why Was He Mob Lynched and Killed in Bangladesh?

The brutal lynching of 25-year-old Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh has triggered nationwide outrage and renewed concerns over mob violence linked to blasphemy allegations.

Das, a member of the Hindu community, was killed in Mymensingh on Thursday night after rumours spread rapidly inside and around his workplace.

Allegations Triggered Violence Inside Factory Area

Dipu Chandra Das worked as a factory labourer at the Pioneer Knit Composite Factory in the Square Masterbari area of Mymensingh. According to local and eyewitness accounts cited by Bengali news outlet Barta Bazar, allegations of blasphemy began circulating within the factory premises and nearby localities, creating tension.

An enraged mob soon turned violent, assaulting Das and beating him severely. He reportedly died on the spot due to the attack.

Body Burnt, Highway Blocked After Lynching

Inspector (Investigation) Abdul Malek of Bhaluka Model Police Station said that after killing Das, the mob abandoned his body on the side of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and set it on fire. The act caused traffic to come to a halt on both sides of the busy road.

Father Learnt of Son's Death Through Social Media

NDTV quoted Dipu Chandra Das's father, Ravilal Das, described the horrific sequence of events and said the family first came to know about the incident through social media.

"We saw it on Facebook. From Facebook we started hearing things, then more people were saying it - and then we found out when someone said to me , my brother...my brother, he was beaten, beaten badly. Then my uncle came after half an hour later and told me they took my son...and they tied him to a tree," said Ravilal Das.

The grieving father further alleged that the mob poured kerosene on his son and set him on fire. "His burned body was left outside. They tied the burned torso and head outside together. It was horrible," he said.

Government Condemnation, Family Alleges No Assurance

Bangladesh's interim government condemned the lynching in a statement issued on Friday, calling it an act that has no place in the country. "There is no space for such violence in the new Bangladesh. The perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared," the statement said.

However, Ravilal Das said the family has received no direct assurance so far. "No one from the government has given any kind of assurance. No one said anything," he told.

Seven Arrested in Lynching Case

The Rapid Action Battalion has arrested seven people in connection with the brutal lynching and killing of Dipu Chandra Das. In a post on X, the Bangladesh government said the arrests followed multiple operations carried out by RAB-14 across different locations.

Those arrested have been identified as Md. Limon Sarkar (19), Md. Tarek Hossain (19), Md. Manik Mia (20), Ershad Ali, Nijum Uddin, Alomgir Hossain (38) and Md. Miraj Hossain Akon (46).
