US Targets ISIS Strongholds In Syria Over Killing of 3 Americans; Trump Says 'You'll Be Hit Harder'

The United States has carried out a large-scale military operation in Syria in direct retaliation for the killing of two American soldiers by ISIS militants in Palmyra. President Donald Trump confirmed the strikes on Friday, declaring that the mission was meant to send a clear message: any attack on Americans will be met with overwhelming force.

Operation Hawkeye Strike Announced

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth revealed that U.S. forces had commenced Operation Hawkeye Strike, targeting ISIS fighters, weapons depots, and infrastructure across Syria. In a statement posted on X, Hegseth described the mission as "a declaration of vengeance" rather than the start of a new war.

"Earlier today, U.S. forces commenced Operation Hawkeye Strike in Syria to eliminate ISIS fighters, infrastructure, and weapons sites in direct response to the attack on U.S. forces that occurred on December 13th in Palmyra," Hegseth wrote. He added that the United States would "never hesitate and never relent" in defending its people.

Trump's Warning to Terrorists

President Trump echoed the sentiment in a post on Truth Social, warning that ISIS would be hit "harder than they have ever been." He said the two soldiers killed in Syria had been honored in a dignified ceremony earlier this week, and pledged that the U.S. would continue striking ISIS strongholds until the group is destroyed.

Trump also claimed that Syria's new government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa after the fall of Bashar al-Assad last year, is cooperating with Washington in the fight against ISIS. He praised Sharaa's leadership and warned terrorists worldwide that any attack on Americans would invite devastating retaliation.

Honoring the Fallen Soldiers

The operation was named "Hawkeye" in tribute to the two soldiers from Iowa who lost their lives in the December 13 attack:

- Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres Tovar, 25, of Des Moines

- Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown

Both were members of the Iowa National Guard's 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division. Three other Guard members were wounded in the attack and evacuated for medical treatment.

Syria's Changing Political Landscape

Syria's government has undergone dramatic change in the past year. Former rebels toppled Assad after a 13-year civil war, and the new administration includes factions that previously broke away from Al Qaeda and later clashed with ISIS. The government has aligned itself with the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State, and last month President Sharaa visited the White House to strengthen cooperation.
