Trump Calls India An Important Strategic Partner, Hails PM Modi As ‘Great Friend’

Former US President Donald Trump has described India as an "important strategic partner" for the United States and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "great friend," the US Embassy in India said in a post on X. According to the post, Trump also referred to India as an "amazing country" and highlighted that it is home to one of the world's oldest civilisations.

Trump's remarks come days after a telephonic conversation between Prime Minister Modi and the US President, during which the two leaders reviewed the progress of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

During the call on December 11, both leaders expressed satisfaction over the steady strengthening of bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to further deepen cooperation across key sectors. They underscored the importance of maintaining strong momentum in initiatives aimed at enhancing bilateral trade, noting that expanded commercial engagement remains central to the economic pillar of the partnership.

Prime Minister Modi and President Trump also exchanged views on expanding cooperation in critical technologies, energy, defence and security. These areas form core components of the India-US COMPACT, an initiative aimed at creating opportunities for closer military collaboration, faster commercial engagement and advanced technology cooperation for the 21st century.

In addition, the two leaders discussed major global and regional developments, stressing the need for close coordination to address shared challenges. Both sides reiterated their commitment to advancing common interests through sustained high-level engagement.

An official release said that the leaders agreed to remain in regular contact, reflecting their shared intent to further strengthen the India-US partnership across multiple domains.
