Stabbing Rampage in Edinburgh Leaves Several Hurt

A large armed response by Police Scotland in Edinburgh’s Calder area led to travel disruption and public alerts after a man was reportedly seen carrying two knives in a residential street, leaving two people injured and forcing officers to seal off several roads.

The disturbance happened on Monday morning in Calder, in the west of Edinburgh, and sparked a major emergency services presence before 9 am, with locals reporting multiple police vehicles, specialist firearms units and police dogs concentrating around a tower block of flats.

Police Scotland confirmed two people were hurt after reports of a man brandishing a bladed weapon, though officers have not yet released details about the nature of the injuries, the condition of those involved, or whether any arrests were made during the ongoing enquiries.

Chief Inspector Scott Kennedy said the situation was contained and officers did not believe there was wider danger to people in Edinburgh. "The incident is not being treated as terror-related," Kennedy said, adding that officers would remain in the area to reassure residents.

A force spokesperson explained that armed officers were sent after early calls about a man with a knife. "The public is being advised to avoid the Calder area of Edinburgh following reports of a man with a bladed weapon," the force said. "Police, including firearms officers, are in attendance."

Residents around Cobbinshaw House described an intense police operation. William Ramsay, who lives nearby, told Press Association that the suspect appeared to enter the stairwell of Ramsay’s block. "He smashed the local shop, possibly stabbed two people unconfirmed," Ramsay said. "Armed police, dogs been here for about two hours."

Images from the scene showed at least six police vehicles surrounding Cobbinshaw House while armed officers took positions around the entrances as the search continued and cordons stayed in place across neighbouring streets in the Calder community.

Lothian Buses announced that its number 20 route would avoid Calder until further notice, adding to disruption already faced by residents who were unable to use some local streets while the operation continued and officers maintained a visible presence across the area.

Police Scotland said investigations would continue in the Calder area through March 2, 2026, with officers expected to keep patrols in place to support residents while detectives piece together what led to the disturbance and assess information from witnesses and local businesses.
