Nine African Migrants Die from Extreme Cold Near Morocco-Algeria Border, Raising Human Rights Concerns

Nine African migrants tragically died due to freezing temperatures near the Morocco-Algeria border. This incident raises serious human rights concerns regarding the treatment of migrants in North Africa.

In a tragic incident near the border of Morocco and Algeria, nine African migrants succumbed to freezing temperatures. Rights groups in Morocco expressed deep concern, highlighting this as a breach of the right to freedom of movement. The Moroccan Association of Human Rights reported that seven men and two women were found deceased in Ras Asfour, a mountainous region notorious for harsh winter conditions.

The association stated, "They died from extreme cold, which their exhausted bodies could not withstand." Among the deceased, one individual was identified as being from Guinea. The others originated from various sub-Saharan African countries, though their specific identities remain undisclosed. The Moroccan Interior Ministry has yet to comment on the incident.

Migration Challenges and Routes

Each year, numerous migrants attempt to leave North Africa for Europe in search of better living conditions. Many try to cross illegally from Morocco to Spain. Some aim for the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla by climbing fences or swimming. Others take the longer Atlantic route to Spain's Canary Islands.

North Africa serves as a key transit point for migrants heading towards Europe's southern borders. Security agreements with the European Union have bolstered efforts to curb migration in this region. Despite these measures, many migrants spend extended periods working informally in sectors like construction and agriculture while awaiting opportunities to cross the Mediterranean or Atlantic.

Human Rights Concerns

The Moroccan Association of Human Rights revealed that six bodies were buried last week, while two were retained at relatives' request. They assured that they would continue monitoring this case closely. Meanwhile, another group, the Moroccan Organisation of Human Rights, urged for more humane border policies and mechanisms to track missing migrants.

This organisation called for decriminalising illegal migration and residence, emphasising the need for a system to prevent tragedies like the one in Ras Asfour. Such measures aim to address the humanitarian aspects of migration and reduce risks faced by those seeking better lives.

Moroccan security forces frequently report thwarting attempts by migrants trying to reach Europe through North Africa. These efforts are part of broader initiatives supported by agreements with European entities aimed at managing migration flows more effectively.

The situation underscores ongoing challenges faced by migrants in North Africa. Many endure hardships while waiting for opportunities to move forward or settle temporarily in the region.
