Massive Earthquake Of Magnitude 6.5 Hits Sanriku Coast In Japan

A powerful 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the Sanriku coast in northern Japan on Thursday, about 122 km east of Yamada, at a depth of roughly 9.5 to 10 km.

Despite the strength of the quake, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, and authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely.

Where and When Did the Earthquake Occur?

The earthquake took place around 122 kilometres east of Yamada, along the Sanriku coastline in northern Japan. It struck late at night, at approximately 11:18 pm local time.

According to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the quake had a magnitude of 6.5 and occurred at a shallow depth of about 9.5 to 10 kilometres.

Shallow earthquakes are usually felt more strongly at the surface, which explains why people in parts of north-eastern Japan experienced noticeable shaking.

Different Agencies Report Varying Details

While USGS and JMA recorded the magnitude at 6.5, other agencies provided slightly different estimates. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude of 6.2 at a depth of 10 kilometres.

India's National Center for Seismology (NCS) estimated the quake at magnitude 6.3 and suggested a deeper origin of around 60 kilometres. It also placed the epicentre further away in the North Pacific Ocean, about 517 kilometres northeast of Tokyo.

Such variations are common, as different agencies use separate methods and data sources to measure earthquakes.

Impact and Intensity of the Tremor

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the earthquake reached a maximum intensity of four on Japan's seismic scale. This level indicates moderate shaking, which can be felt indoors but usually does not cause severe damage.

Since the epicentre was located offshore, the impact on populated areas was limited. This helped reduce the risk of serious destruction.

No Tsunami Warning Issued

One of the key concerns after any offshore earthquake in Japan is the possibility of a tsunami. However, authorities confirmed that no tsunami warning had been issued following this event.

This provided reassurance to residents living along the coastal regions.

Authorities Monitoring for Aftershocks

Even though the situation remains under control, officials are closely watching for aftershocks. It is common for earthquakes of this magnitude to be followed by smaller tremors.

Residents in the affected areas have been advised to stay alert and follow safety guidelines.
