Russia's renowned aerobatics team has paid a moving tribute to Wing Commander Namansh Syal, the Indian Air Force pilot who lost his life in the Tejas crash during a display at the Dubai Air Show. The gesture marked a moment of collective grief across the global aviation community.

Russian Knights Perform the Missing Man Formation

The Russian Knights carried out the symbolic Missing Man manoeuvre during their display, dedicating the tribute to Syal. Sharing a video on VK, the team described the incident as "impossible to describe" and said their aerial performance was meant to honor "the brothers who did not return from the last flight".

Their gesture echoed the profound sense of loss felt by pilots and aviation teams present at the show.

US Aerobatic Pilot Recalls Heartbreaking Scenes

US aerobatic pilot Taylor "FEMA" Hiester also recounted the somber atmosphere following the tragedy. He posted on Instagram that the team voluntarily withdrew from their final performance on the second day of the event out of respect for Syal. Hiester wrote, "After two years of doing this job, that was a first for our team and it came just before our final performance of the season. Together and individually, we all quietly watched the aftermath unfold from a distance thinking about the Indian maintenance crew standing on the ramp next to an empty parking spot, aircraft ladder laid on the ground, the pilot's belongings still in his rental car. I suppose each of us contemplated their new reality that came in an instant."

He added that the return to normal activity at the venue highlighted how "the show must go on".

Crash Stuns Spectators at Dubai Air Show

Eyewitnesses were left in shock as the Tejas crashed during a low-altitude negative G turn, sending flames and black smoke rising over Al Maktoum International Airport. Syal had been scheduled to fly an eight-minute demonstration as part of the Indian Air Force's participation in one of the world's largest aviation shows.

The tragic accident marked a devastating end to the event for the Indian contingent and fellow aviators watching from across the tarmac.

Nation Bids Farewell to a Dedicated Air Warrior

Syal was cremated on Sunday at his ancestral village in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra after the Indian Air Force received his mortal remains with full military honors at the Sulur Air Force Base in Tamil Nadu. The IAF described him as a "dedicated fighter pilot" and a professional who served the nation with unwavering commitment and exceptional skill.

This crash is the second accident involving the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft in under two years. Previously, on March 12, 2024, another Tejas jet crashed near a residential area in Jaisalmer after returning from the tri-services exercise Bharat Shakti. That incident was the first crash involving the indigenous fighter since it entered service in 2001.
