'We Are VIPs...': Karnataka MLA Demands IPL Tickets And Exclusive Seating, Sparks Debate On Public Privilege

A recent statement by Karnataka Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar has triggered a wider debate on "VIP culture" in India.

The legislator demanded that every MLA should be given at least five tickets for Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, saying elected representatives should not have to stand in queues like the general public.

The controversy comes just days before the IPL 2026 season opener in Bengaluru between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on March 28.

Speaking on the issue, Kashappanavar said that MLAs are public representatives and should be treated as VIPs. He argued that they cannot stand in long queues or sit with the general public during matches.

He also expressed frustration over past experiences, claiming that legislators were made to wait in lines and were seated in common galleries during previous matches. According to him, this was not appropriate given their status and responsibilities.

Demand for Tickets and Special Seating

The MLA has demanded that each legislator be given a minimum of five tickets for IPL matches. He also called for separate seating arrangements for MLAs and ministers.

Kashappanavar said the issue has been raised in the Karnataka Assembly, and lawmakers have urged the Speaker to take action. He claimed that the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has not been cooperating with elected representatives despite receiving support and facilities from the government.

The Congress leader also accused the KSCA of not respecting MLAs and alleged that tickets were being sold in the black market at inflated prices.

According to him, ticket prices reportedly ranged from ₹5,000 to ₹35,000, making it difficult for many to access matches. He suggested that better regulation and fair distribution of tickets are needed.

Kashappanavar stated that Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has assured legislators that the issue will be resolved. He expressed hope that arrangements would be made to provide tickets to MLAs before the matches begin.
