Vajpayee's Leadership Exemplified Inclusivity Through Raj Dharma, Says Murli Manohar Joshi

Murli Manohar Joshi, a senior figure in the BJP, praised former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a leader who could unite India while adhering to his principles of Raj Dharma and Sangathan Dharma. Joshi made these remarks during the launch of a coffee table book on Vajpayee's life. He highlighted Vajpayee's mantra of Insaniyat, Jamhuriyat, and Kashmiriyat as essential for a thriving democracy.

Joshi elaborated on the significance of these principles, explaining that Insaniyat stands for humanity, Jamhuriyat represents democracy, and Kashmiriyat signifies the cultural identity of Kashmir. He emphasised that India's democracy would continue to prosper as long as these values are upheld. Joshi noted that Vajpayee consistently adhered to Raj Dharma, Sangathan Dharma, and Coalition Dharma throughout his tenure.

Vajpayee's Unique Leadership

Vajpayee's leadership was marked by his ability to manage a diverse coalition, which Joshi described as an unprecedented experiment in Indian politics. The coalition included parties like the DMK, AIADMK, BSP, Lok Janshakti Party, and Akali Dal. Joshi believed no other leader could have united such varied political forces to govern effectively.

Reflecting on Vajpayee's leadership style, Joshi remarked that while many leaders have governed with absolute majorities, Vajpayee's success with a large coalition showcased the depth of Indian political culture. He considered this experience unique and unmatched in Indian history.

Understanding Raj Dharma

Joshi recounted a conversation with Vajpayee about the meaning of Raj Dharma. Vajpayee asked what it truly meant, and Joshi replied that it involved making impartial and fearless decisions as a ruler. Vajpayee agreed but questioned what should happen if he failed to uphold it. Joshi advised that in such cases, resignation was necessary.

Vajpayee candidly admitted to sometimes questioning whether he was fully upholding Raj Dharma and contemplating resignation. Joshi reminded him that he was chosen by the nation and supported by 23 coalition partners, implying he had no right to feel bored or disillusioned with politics.

The Pokhran Nuclear Tests

Joshi also spoke about Vajpayee's determination during the Pokhran nuclear tests. After the first test, when journalists inquired about future actions, Vajpayee hinted at more steps to follow. Joshi explained that once such a strategic decision is made, it must be seen through to its conclusion to avoid international interference.

He stressed that any hesitation could have allowed global powers to hinder India's progress. This resolve demonstrated Vajpayee's commitment to India's strategic interests and his ability to make tough decisions under pressure.
