The comment, linked to an event in Almora last month, suggested that girls from Bihar could be arranged for marriage for a fixed sum, prompting widespread condemnation.
Controversial remark at Almora event sparks backlash
A purported video circulating on social media shows Sahu telling an audience, "Will you get married in old age? If you are unable to get married, we will bring a girl for you from Bihar... you can get one there for Rs 20,000 to 25,000." In the same clip, he is heard adding, "Come with me, we'll get you married."
The video is reported to be from a public gathering in Almora. Soon after it surfaced, the remark drew criticism for portraying women as commodities and reinforcing harmful stereotypes.
Apology issued as BJP distances itself
Following the outrage, Girdhari Lal Sahu released a video statement claiming his words were being misrepresented. He said he was referring to the marriage of a friend and added, "If my words have offended or hurt anyone, I apologise with folded hands."
The BJP's Uttarakhand unit condemned the remark and made it clear that Sahu has no association with the party. State BJP media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said the party strongly denounces such thinking and reiterated that Sahu does not hold any position within the organisation.
Congress calls remarks an insult to women
The opposition Indian National Congress launched a sharp attack, calling the statement deeply offensive. Congress state president Ganesh Godiyal said, "This statement by minister Arya's husband is an insult to the daughters of India, whether she is from Bihar, Kerala, or Uttarakhand."
He added that the comment exposed the BJP's mindset on women's dignity and demanded an apology from the party. Congress Mahila Morcha state president Jyoti Rautela also condemned the remark, calling it shameful, particularly because Sahu's wife holds the women and child welfare portfolio.
"This is an attack on the dignity of women and girls. This kind of thinking promotes social evils like human trafficking, child marriage, and exploitation of women," Rautela said.
Bihar State Women Commission to issue notice
The Bihar State Women Commission has taken cognisance of the matter and announced that it will issue a notice to Sahu. Commission chairperson Apsara said, "His comments are highly condemnable. This shows his mental bankruptcy. How can he make such a statement about women when his wife is already a minister in the Uttarakhand government?"
The controversy continues to draw attention as political leaders and women's groups demand accountability and stronger action against remarks that demean women and normalise exploitation.
