A conflict erupted between two groups over the cremation of an elderly woman near the Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh's Khargone district. The altercation turned violent, resulting in injuries to at least ten individuals, according to police reports.

The incident unfolded when Mohan Patidar's family arrived at the Narmada river to perform the last rites for his 90-year-old grandmother. Villagers from another group objected to the cremation being conducted about 200 metres from the riverbank, which is not a designated area for such rituals.

Police Intervention and Injuries

As tensions rose, a heated argument quickly escalated into violence. Stones were thrown, injuring ten people, including a police constable and a village kotwar, who is a government helper. Police teams from Mandleshwar, Maheshwar, and Kasrawad were dispatched to control the situation.

Mandleshwar police station house officer Pankaj Tiwari confirmed that the cremation was completed under heavy police presence. "The situation is under control," stated Mandleshwar Sub-Divisional Police Officer Shweta Shukla.

Legal Actions and Investigation

Authorities have registered cases against 19 identified individuals and 25 unidentified ones based on complaints from both parties involved. The investigation into the incident is ongoing to determine further details and accountability.

The clash highlights tensions over traditional practices and designated areas for performing last rites. The police continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent any further escalation of violence in the region.
