Russian President Vladimir Putin’s arrival in Delhi featured more than ceremony, as car choice drew notice. Prime Minister Narendra Modi rode with Putin in a white Toyota Fortuner, instead of the usual Range Rover, for the drive to the Prime Minister’s residence, after a red carpet welcome, a tarmac greeting, a firm handshake and a hug.

The visit, Putin’s first trip to India in four years, included a private dinner at the Prime Minister’s residence. Modi’s official fleet currently featured a Range Rover and a Mercedes-Maybach S650 Guard, both associated with Europe. The Range Rover belonged to Tata Motors but was produced in the UK, while the Mercedes-Benz originated from Germany. The UK and Germany had imposed extensive sanctions on Russia and backed Kyiv with weapons and other support.

Online reactions, however, treated the choice as a signal to Western capitals. Defence analyst Colonel Rohit Dev posted, "A message to the West," while the phrase “Fortuner diplomacy” gained traction in discussions. The vehicle’s visibility, sandwiched between high-profile motorcades, turned it into a talking point well beyond automotive circles.

Political and strategic commentators also weighed in on social media. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla wrote, "Both jumped into PM's Fortuner (yes, the legendary Toyota Fortuner! Smart people will know why)," hinting at deeper meaning. Another user observed, "By selecting a non-European Japanese brand, the move avoids Western manufacturers targeted by Russian sanctions." A third person added, "Toyota, being an Asian brand, I think they avoided anything European," echoing the same theme.

The Fortuner appeared in another key engagement during Putin’s stay. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also used a white Fortuner when travelling with Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov to the National War Memorial to lay a wreath, reinforcing the SUV’s presence in high-level India-Russia interactions during the visit.

Whether the Fortuner choice stemmed mainly from seating needs or deliberate signalling remained unclear, as officials offered no formal explanation.
