Punjab's Bhagwant Mann Govt Fulfils Promise, Revives Punjab’s Iconic Rural Games
The dust is flying again at Kila Raipur - and so is Punjab's pride.
After a 12-year pause, the legendary bullock cart races thundered back to life as the Kila Raipur Rural Olympics-2026 has kicked off, turning the quiet village near Ludhiana into a carnival of cheers, colour and competition. Packed stands, beating drums and the raw energy of rural sport marked the comeback of one of Punjab's most iconic festivals.

The revival fulfils a key promise made by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, aimed at reconnecting the younger generation with traditional games and the farming roots of the state. For many spectators, the sight of bullocks charging down the track was not just sport - it was memory, identity and heritage all rolled into one.
Tradition meets regulation
This long-awaited return was made possible after the state cleared legal roadblocks by passing the Punjab Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Punjab Amendment) Act, 2025. The law introduces strict safety norms and monitoring mechanisms, ensuring animal welfare while allowing the centuries-old sport to continue in a regulated, responsible manner.
The result: tradition without compromise - and a crowd that couldn't get enough.
A festival beyond races
The games were inaugurated by Punjab Cabinet Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian at Kila Raipur, in the presence of MLA Jiwan Singh Sangowal and Dr KNS Kang. Emphasising the cultural weight of the event, Minister Khuddian said the Rural Olympics mirror Punjab's agrarian lifestyle and collective village spirit.
Beyond bullock carts, the three-day spectacle (February 17-19) features kabaddi, hockey, athletics, cycling, tug-of-war and other traditional contests, turning the stadium into a showcase of grit and grassroots talent.
Sports with a future focus
The Rural Olympics are also part of Punjab's larger sports vision. The state has enhanced cash rewards for Olympic and international medal winners, while offering promising athletes opportunities in Punjab Civil Services and Punjab Police Services - a move aimed at turning rural talent into national champions.
