“Possessed By Ghost”: Passenger Tries To Open Emergency Exit On IndiGo Flight Before Landing
Passengers aboard an IndiGo flight from Bengaluru to Varanasi faced a tense mid-air scare on Saturday after a man allegedly tried twice to tamper with the aircraft's emergency exit door, including once just moments before landing. The passenger was later detained and, during questioning, claimed he was "possessed by a ghost", prompting a police investigation into the incident.

Passenger first warned shortly after take-off
The incident took place on IndiGo flight 6E-185, which departed from Bengaluru at around 8:15 pm for Varanasi. Among those on board was Mohammad Adnan, a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Mau district. According to officials, Adnan first attempted to tamper with the emergency exit door around 15 minutes after take-off.
Cabin crew quickly noticed the move and intervened. He reportedly told them it was a mistake and was warned not to repeat the action. After that, officials said, he appeared to behave normally for the remainder of the journey.
Second attempt made minutes before landing
The situation escalated again at around 10.20 pm, when the flight was preparing to land at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi. Officials said that with the aircraft flying at nearly 500 feet above the ground, Adnan again tried to open the emergency exit door.
The cabin crew immediately alerted the cockpit, following which the pilot aborted the landing attempt in a swift precautionary move. The aircraft then carried out a go-around before making a safe landing at 10.35 pm.
Passengers on board were left shaken by the incident, while officials praised the flight crew for handling the emergency calmly and ensuring a safe arrival.
Passenger handed over to security after safe landing
Once the aircraft landed safely, Adnan was taken into custody as per standard aviation safety protocol. He was immediately handed over to IndiGo's security personnel and the CISF (Central Industrial Security Force). Local police were also informed, and a case was registered against him.
During questioning at the airport, Adnan initially told officials that he did not know why he had behaved in that manner. Later, he claimed he had been "possessed by a ghost".
Police continue questioning, family informed
Police said further questioning is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and Adnan's intent. During interrogation at the police station, he reportedly told investigators that he was returning from a holiday in Goa and was unaware that the handle he pulled was linked to the aircraft's emergency exit door.
"Our investigation is on and the accused is still being questioned. His family, which lives in Mau, has been informed and they are on their way to Varanasi," said a police official.
