R-DAY 2026: PM Modi Sports Navy Blue Kurta with Vibrant Red and Yellow Bandhani Turban for 77th Republic Day

For the 77th Republic Day celebrations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's attire once again drew attention for its blend of tradition, regional heritage, and modern style. The highlight of his look was the Rajasthani-style turban often called a pagdi or safa, featuring Leheriya (wave-like) patterns in vibrant red and yellow and light green hues, colours traditionally associated with auspiciousness and festive joy in Western India. Following his signature tradition, the Prime Minister selects a unique turban from a different Indian state each year, symbolising India's cultural diversity.

Complementing the turban, he wore a light blue, sleeveless tailored jacket, popularly called the "Modi Jacket," an evolution of the classic Nehru jacket. The jacket, likely crafted from high-quality Khadi or hand-loomed silk, reflects a commitment to India's local textile industry. A colorful pocket square subtly matched the turban, tying the ensemble together.

Beneath the jacket, he opted for a dark navy blue Kurta, providing a sharp contrast to the lighter jacket and the vibrant turban, creating a professional yet culturally rooted silhouette.

The prime minister's Republic Day and Independence Day Day appearances have consistently featured distinctive and vivid turbans.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi extended his greetings on the occasion through a post on X. "Heartiest Republic Day greetings to all my fellow citizens. May this grand national festival, a symbol of India's honour, pride and glory, infuse new energy and enthusiasm into your lives. May the resolve for a developed India grow even stronger," he wrote.

PM Modi is widely known for wearing vibrant traditional headgear on national occasions, often seen as reflecting cultural pride and regional identity. His turbans are frequently crafted in the bandhej style - a traditional tie-and-dye technique practised mainly in Rajasthan, Gujarat and parts of Uttar Pradesh - highlighting India's rich textile heritage.

Over the years, the Prime Minister's sartorial choices have drawn attention both at home and abroad. His wardrobe typically blends tradition with modernity, featuring kurtas, bandhgala jackets and tailored suits, complemented by headgear that often carries cultural significance.
