A fresh controversy has emerged ahead of the second phase of polling in West Bengal after the appointment of IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma as a poll observer in South 24 Parganas.

The row began after a video of Sharma went viral on social media. In the clip, he is seen issuing strict warnings to police personnel and locals regarding alleged threats in the area.
Sharma reportedly referred to Jehangir Khan, said to be a close aide of Abhishek Banerjee. He warned that any attempt to create trouble or intimidate others would be dealt with firmly under the law.

In the video, he also addressed Khan's family, asking them to ensure that no one engages in unlawful activities, adding that strict action would follow if complaints continue.

Opposition Raises Questions

The video quickly drew criticism from opposition leaders. Akhilesh Yadav questioned the intent behind Sharma's appointment, suggesting that such officials were being used to influence the election.

Leaders from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) also attacked the move, alleging that Sharma had a controversial past and accusing him of targeting specific individuals.

TMC leaders claimed that his conduct raised concerns about neutrality, with some calling him "biased" and questioning his role as an observer.

Allegations Against the Officer

The TMC further highlighted past allegations against Sharma, including claims of involvement in a cash-for-postings scandal and other charges. The party argued that such a record should disqualify him from overseeing elections.

They also warned him against overstepping his authority, stating that law enforcement in Bengal must remain within constitutional limits. On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly defended Sharma. The party said his presence would ensure free and fair elections in the region.

BJP leaders praised his tough approach and said it sends a clear message that intimidation and unlawful activities will not be tolerated during polling.
