Illegal egg extraction racket in Maharashtra triggers Badlapur review and IVF licence checks

Maharashtra State Women’s Commission chairperson Rupali Chakankar convened a review meeting in Badlapur, Thane, after an alleged illegal human egg extraction racket surfaced. Officials say women were lured into repeated donation cycles using forged Aadhaar documents, and an IVF facility allegedly operated without authorisation. FDA and police were asked to verify licences and act on unlawful MTP kit sales.

Maharashtra State Womens Commission chairperson Rupali Chakankar held a review meeting in Badlapur, Thane district, after officials found an illegal human egg extraction racket. Officials said at least 40 women were targeted using forged Aadhaar papers. A facility named Malti IVF Centre was licensed only for Nashik. Officials said it allegedly operated in Thane without permission.

The case began after a woman said payment was not given for an egg donation. Police then raided the alleged kingpin’s home and recovered hormonal injections. Officers later checked mobile phone data and found details about donors and travel. Police said women were promised Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 for donating eggs.

Chakankar said officials were seeing a wider and more serious case than first assumed. Chakankar said the probe found none of the five arrested accused had medical qualifications. Yet, Chakankar said the accused allegedly gave hormone injections and performed extractions. Chakankar also said the procedures were done under anaesthesia despite the lack of training.

Police said the seized data showed women were moved across several places for extraction. Police listed Bengaluru, Telangana, Nagpur, Pune and Nashik as destinations. Police said donors received hormone injections before being taken for the procedure. Officials said the women came from economically vulnerable backgrounds and were pulled into repeated cycles.

Police said early findings pointed to more than 40 women being exploited. Police also said one donor was allegedly made to undergo egg extraction 33 times. Police said this broke the Assisted Reproductive Technology Regulation Act 2021 rules. Police said the law allows egg donation only once in a lifetime.

Chakankar directed the Food and Drug Administration FDA and local police to check licences. The instruction covered all sonography centres and IVF clinics in the area. Chakankar also sought statewide raids on medical stores. Chakankar said these raids should target shops selling medical termination of pregnancy MTP kits without prescriptions.

"The illegal sale of female eggs has exposed a massive network. We will continue to follow up to ensure a thorough investigation into the masterminds and the faulty drug supply chain,\" Chakankar said.

Officials said Malti IVF Centre was authorised for Nashik, not Thane. Police said forged Aadhaar documents were used to avoid checks and continue donations. The investigation is continuing through phone records and seized material. Authorities said the review meeting aimed to tighten oversight across the region and support deeper action.
