Outside LPG outlets in Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow and Chennai, crowds grew through the day. Women with children waited beside empty cylinders. Elderly residents and office workers, who took leave to secure refills, stood in queues for hours. Similar scenes over the LPG shortage were reported from several other urban centres.

LPG shortage exposes weak booking infrastructure and distributor concerns

Shashi Kant Sharma, vice-president of Federation of LPG Distributors of India, admitted that systems are overwhelmed. "Bookings have risen tenfold, so the system has slowed. We are working on it at the backend," he said. Distributors added that existing digital tools were never designed to handle such sudden demand spikes linked to an LPG shortage.

Amid anxiety about the LPG shortage, courts and regulators were also drawn into the issue. The Nagpur bench of Bombay HC asked the Centre, Directorate General of Foreign Trade, and Confidence Petroleum India to respond to a petition from six LPG distributors. They argued that continued LPG exports conflict with a March 9 order restricting exports of essential goods and prioritising domestic supply.

Employers are adjusting operations in response to the LPG shortage. After Infosys, Cognizant urged staff to consider “Bring Your Own Food”, wherever possible, as canteens face fuel constraints. Hotels, restaurants, caterers, office canteens and street vendors cut menus, shut some kitchens and checked alternatives such as induction stoves or other fuels.
