For the first time, live-in couples who consider their relationship stable will be counted as married in official data.

Census 2027 to Be Conducted in Two Phases

Phase 2: Population Enumeration

The second phase will begin in February 2027 across most parts of India.

However, in colder regions like Ladakh, parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, this phase will take place earlier, around September 2026.

• Name, age, and gender
• Marital status

• Occupation and migration details
• Fertility data for married women

New Option of Self-Enumeration Introduced

A major highlight of Census 2027 is the introduction of self-enumeration.
Citizens will now have the option to fill in their own details through an online portal. This is in addition to the traditional method where a government enumerator visits each household.

• Individuals can submit their details online at their convenience
• After submission, they will receive a Self-Enumeration ID
• An enumerator will later visit the household to verify the information
