Just One Day After President’s Rule Is Revoked In Manipur, Fresh Violence Erupts, Amid Protests Over New Govt

Tension gripped Churachandpur district in Manipur on Thursday Just one day after President's Rule was revoked in Manipur.

The district witnessed fresh violence, underscoring the fragile law-and-order situation in the state.

Violent protests broke out in the Tuibong area against the formation of the newly installed "popular government." The situation remained volatile throughout the day, prompting authorities to deploy heavy security to prevent further unrest.

The protests reflected growing anger and frustration among sections of the local population, particularly within the Kuki community, over recent political developments.

Opposition to Popular Government Formation

According to local sources, the unrest began early in the morning after news spread that several Kuki MLAs had extended support to the newly formed popular government. Protesters accused these elected representatives of going against public sentiment at a time when demands for a separate administrative arrangement remain unresolved.

Demonstrators gathered in large numbers and made it clear that they would not accept the popular government unless their long-standing demand for separate administration was addressed. Many protesters said the decision by Kuki leaders to support the government ignored the pain and concerns of the community.

Tensions escalated further after the government was formed in the presence of several Kuki MLAs, including Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, along with L. M. Khaute and Ngursanglur Sanate. For many protesters, this moment symbolised what they described as a betrayal of community aspirations.

Self-Immolation Attempts Raise Alarm
