Yadav reported that four deaths were linked to the contaminated water issue. The outbreak was severe, but government efforts ensured timely treatment for many, improving their condition. "The state government will not tolerate any negligence. We are prepared to take the strictest possible action against those responsible for the incident," he stated.
Contaminated Water Investigation
The health of approximately 40,000 residents in Bhagirthpura was screened. Among them, 2,456 suspected cases of vomiting and diarrhoea were identified. Currently, 162 patients remain hospitalised, with most in stable condition. Of the 212 initially admitted, 50 have been discharged after recovery.
Following Yadav's directives, a zonal officer and an assistant engineer from the municipal corporation were suspended immediately. Additionally, an in-charge sub-engineer's services were terminated. "Based on the preliminary inquiry, action has been taken against some municipal corporation officials," Yadav mentioned.
Preventive Measures and Future Steps
A leakage was discovered in the main water supply pipeline in Bhagirthpura, where a toilet had been constructed over it. This likely led to water contamination. Officials have formed a three-member committee led by an IAS officer to investigate further into this incident.
Yadav instructed officials to thoroughly examine complaints about leaks in drinking water and sewer lines across the city. Necessary measures will be implemented to prevent such incidents from recurring. New appointments will address staff shortages within the municipal corporation.
The chief minister emphasised that further actions would depend on the detailed investigation report. "Further steps will be taken based on the detailed investigation report," he added.
