Historic Announcement By CM Bhagwant Mann; 40 lakh Families To Receive Free Ration Under ‘Meri Rasoi Yojna'

In a major welfare push aimed at strengthening food and nutrition security across Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday announced the launch of the 'Meri Rasoi Yojna'.

Under the scheme, nearly 40 lakh families will receive free quarterly food kits starting April, in addition to wheat already provided under the National Food Security Act - a move the state government says fills gaps left by existing central support.

Unveiling the scheme, CM Mann said his government "knows how to generate resources for people's welfare" and works with "honesty and vision," stressing that ensuring nutritious food for every child is a moral duty rather than a political slogan.

In an apparent contrast with the Centre's approach, he indicated that Punjab would expand welfare measures through its upcoming pro-people Budget to ensure that no family is left behind.

Addressing the media, the Chief Minister said the initiative reflects the state government's commitment to strengthening food and nutrition security at a time when rising prices and economic pressure continue to burden ordinary households.

Recalling Punjab's historic contribution to making the country self-reliant in food production, CM Mann said the state's farmers have long ensured that the nation does not go hungry. However, he pointed out that despite Punjab's role in feeding India, many families within the state still struggle to manage daily meals - a reality he suggested has not received adequate attention from the Centre.

"Keeping these hardships in mind, the state government has started this ambitious 'Meri Rasoi Yojna'," he said.

Detailing the scheme, CM Mann said food kits will be provided to 40 lakh families and will include two kilograms of lentils, two kilograms of sugar, one kilogram of salt, 200 grams of turmeric powder and one litre of mustard oil for monthly consumption. These kits will be given in addition to the wheat already distributed under the National Food Security Act, ensuring broader nutritional support beyond basic grain supply.

He further announced that Markfed will act as the nodal agency for the initiative, with the Food and Civil Supplies department supplying the kits free of cost. The government has put in place a detailed mechanism to ensure smooth and transparent distribution across the state.

Emphasising Punjab's legacy, CM Mann said the state has always led from the front in addressing food crises and that this initiative continues that tradition of people-centric governance. He added that the scheme was not even part of the party's election manifesto but was introduced as a moral responsibility towards citizens - a remark seen by many as a subtle critique of promise-driven politics elsewhere.

Highlighting the scheme's impact, the Chief Minister said it would ensure that every child has access to nutritious food and help improve overall food security across Punjab. He confirmed that distribution will begin in April and will take place every quarter.

CM Mann also assured that quality will be strictly monitored. Any complaint regarding poor quality or irregular supply, he said, will be dealt with firmly to maintain public trust in the scheme.

Reaffirming his government's commitment, CM Mann said the upcoming state Budget will further strengthen welfare measures and focus on the well-being of every section of society, signalling Punjab's intention to chart its own welfare path rather than rely solely on central initiatives.
