Himanta Biswa Sarma To Take Oath Today For Second Term As Assam Chief Minister

Himanta Biswa Sarma is sworn in for a third term as Assam Chief Minister, with a concise cabinet lineup including ministers Rameswar Teli, Ajanta Neog, Atul Bora, and Charan Boro, and a Speaker nominee, signalling continued NDA governance in Assam and the Northeast region.

Himanta Biswa Sarma is scheduled to be sworn in as Assam Chief Minister for a second consecutive term on 12 May 2026 in Guwahati. The oath ceremony will also see four ministers and the next Speaker of the Assam Assembly taking office, starting the BJP-led NDA government's third straight tenure.

After the NDA's sweeping win in the Assam Assembly elections, Himanta Biswa Sarma was unanimously picked as leader of the NDA legislature party. The BJP, Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People's Front alliance is returning to power again, further entrenching the coalition's position in Assam and the wider Northeast region.

Alongside Himanta Biswa Sarma, only four leaders will join the new Assam cabinet at the swearing-in. Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog will represent the BJP, while Atul Bora will take oath from the Asom Gana Parishad and Charan Boro from the Bodoland People's Front, reflecting the NDA's coalition balance.

Rameswar Teli, a senior tea-tribe leader, earlier served as Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries and later for Petroleum and Natural Gas during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's second term. Teli spent 10 years in the Assam Assembly and another decade in the Lok Sabha before a Rajya Sabha nomination in 2024.

Rameswar Teli has now returned to state politics by winning the Duliajan seat, which Teli earlier represented from 2001 to 2011. Ajanta Neog, regarded as one of Himanta Biswa Sarma's closest political associates, has secured the Golaghat constituency for the sixth consecutive time, underscoring Neog's enduring base.

Both Himanta Biswa Sarma and Ajanta Neog first entered the Assam Assembly in 2001 as Congress members and later served as ministers under former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. After Himanta Biswa Sarma joined the BJP, Ajanta Neog followed in 2020 and became Finance Minister in the previous Sarma government, becoming Assam's first woman to hold that portfolio.

Atul Bora, president of the Asom Gana Parishad, comes from the student movement linked to the Assam Agitation and has held cabinet posts in both earlier BJP-led governments in the state. Charan Boro of the Bodoland People's Front has been elected from Majbat for a third time and entered the Sarma ministry in October 2025 as part of the BJP-BPF alliance understanding before the polls.

Himanta Biswa Sarma has also announced that former Assam BJP president Ranjeet Dass will be the NDA's nominee for the Speaker's position in the Assembly. With the Chief Minister, cabinet ministers and proposed Speaker identified, the BJP-led coalition is preparing to start its third consecutive term of governance in Assam.
