Has Elon Musk's X Banned 18+ Adult Content in India? Users Report Access Restricted

Elon Musk-owned social media platform X has reportedly geo-restricted access to consensual 18+ and pornographic (adult) content in India, prompting intense debate online. While there has been no formal standalone press release from the company, users across India claim that explicit posts and videos are no longer viewable on the platform.

Several accounts say the restriction began on March 3, 2026, and appears to be limited to Indian users. According to posts circulating online, affected content now displays a notice stating: "Due to local regulations, this content is restricted on X."

The reported move comes months after Advocate Vineet Jindal filed complaints against the platform over the transmission of sexually explicit content. In 2024, he initiated a criminal complaint, and in August 2025, he submitted a formal grievance to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Govt Forwarded Complaint to MeitY

In a letter dated September 8, 2025, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting informed Jindal that matters related to social media intermediaries fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The complaint was subsequently forwarded to MeitY for "appropriate necessary action."

After months of follow-up, Jindal recently stated that concrete action has now been taken. While the government has not explicitly linked the reported geo-restriction to his complaint, he has described the development as an important step toward digital accountability.

What Grok Says About the Reported Restriction

When users asked X's AI assistant Grok about the development, it reportedly responded that the platform has geo-restricted consensual adult content in India to comply with local IT regulations on obscene material.

Grok is said to have clarified that this is not a global ban and that X's worldwide policy still permits properly labeled adult content. The reported restriction, according to Grok's explanation, applies specifically to India in line with local regulatory requirements.

The AI response also reportedly mentioned that some users may bypass the restriction using VPN services, though content reach within India would remain limited.

However, these claims remain based on user-shared screenshots and posts, and there has been no independent verification or official detailed policy announcement at the time of writing.

Users Report Blank Bookmarks, Filtered Searches

Many Indian users claim that previously saved 18+ posts now show blank previews. Others report that searches using explicit keywords no longer load results, suggesting a broad filtering mechanism for Indian IP addresses.

Supporters of the reported move have praised it as a responsible step aligned with Indian legal norms. Some users argue that tighter controls could shield minors and better comply with local expectations around digital content.

Critics, however, have expressed frustration over disappearing bookmarks and reduced access. Several posts questioned whether the decision was made by Elon Musk personally or was mandated by Indian authorities.
