Earthquake Of 5.9 Magnitude Jolts Myanmar, and Kolkata

Residents in Kolkata reported mild shaking on Tuesday after an earthquake in neighbouring Myanmar, measured at magnitude 5.9 on the Richter scale. Authorities in West Bengal and Myanmar monitored the situation, and early reports from disaster officials said there were no casualties or structural damage linked to the tremors.

The shaking was felt across several parts of the Kolkata metropolitan area, especially in upper floors of residential and office buildings. Many people briefly stepped outdoors, but city services and transport operations continued as normal, according to initial local administrative assessments.

Recent earthquake activity in Myanmar and Andaman region

The Myanmar tremor followed another regional event, as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands experienced an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 on Monday at about 3.30 am, according to the National Center of Seismology. The agency reported the focus at a depth of 10 km beneath the seabed.

Data from the National Center of Seismology placed the Andaman event at latitude 9.03 North and longitude 92.78 East. Seismologists continued to track aftershocks and regional activity, but no deaths or damage were recorded from either earthquake, offering relief to residents across eastern India and nearby coastal areas.
